Lime Rock Park is teaming up with some of NASCAR’s biggest names to support a worthwhile cause.
The park will be hosting the AARP “Drive to End Hunger” Jeff Gordon Day at Lime Rock on Thursday, Sept. 18. The event will serve as an unofficial kickoff to a busy weekend at Lime Rock as it falls the day before the start of the Trans Am race weekend.
Along with Gordon, Kasey Kahne, Gordon’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate, will attend the event. Gordon and Kahne are two of this season’s NASCAR Sprint Cup “Chase for the Championship” qualifiers and will be joined by Gordon’s crew chief, Alan Gustafson and team owner Rick Hendrick.
The AARP Foundation’s “Drive to End Hunger” is Lime Rock Park’s official charity for 2014. Hendrick Motorsports and Jeff Gordon have been spearheading the AARP campaign since 2011.
The track has set a goal of raising $96,000 for the “Drive to End Hunger,” which helps feed senior Americans who lack enough money to buy food. The charity helps fund local food banks in Connecticut’s Northwest Corner, Southern Berkshire County in Massachusetts and eastern Dutchess County in New York.
“This is a great cause and the whole Drive to End Hunger charity is something very close to Skip’s heart,” said Lime Rock spokesman Rick Roso. “It’s very important to him because the food ends up in the northwest corner.”
The day will be filled with opportunities for race fans to contribute to a good cause and get close to some of NASCAR’s biggest stars. A $24 donation will get fans into a hosted interview with Gordon, Kahne, Hendrick and Gustafson.
Hot laps on the track with Gordon have already sold out but for a $400 donation, you get three hot laps with Gustafson in a 2015 Chevy Camaro Z/28 prototype and for a $500 donation fans get three hot laps with Kasey Kahne in a 2015 Chevy Camaro Z/28 prototype.
“You get almost four laps, starting out of pit road,” Roso said. “To get around the track with some of NASCAR’s best will be an awesome experience.”
The day will end with...
