FOX NASCAR QUOTES

On Jimmie Johnson aiming for Darrell Waltrip and Bobby Allison’s 84-win mark:

“I’m a big Jimmie Johnson fan. I always have been impressed by his humility and the fact he goes about his job with style and grace. I have never heard him draw attention to himself or brag about his unbelievable accomplishments. He is a rare breed, for sure. When he breaks my record of 84 wins, I will be happy to see it done by a true southern gentleman, one who just happens to be from the West Coast. I support him in everything he does, including breaking my record. I’d love to see Johnson get to 100. Good luck, champ!”

--Darrell Waltrip

On Ryan Blaney’s first career win last weekend at Pocono Raceway:

“How would Ryan Blaney have felt if he had heard that crowd cheering for him as he took the lead and his first win? I love the Wood Brothers. I was fortunate enough to drive for them, and I know how popular in the garage area this victory is for those guys.”

--Michael Waltrip

“With 14 races into the season, Blaney’s win didn’t just fall out of the sky. The No. 21 car has had good speed at every track and have been knocking on the door. He has a lot to be proud of after beating Kyle Busch and holding off Kevin Harvick to get that win. It certainly wasn’t handed to him.”

--Larry McReynolds

On brake failures at Pocono Raceway:

“One of the things that’s really popped into my mind is the brake issues we’re seeing this year. We’re seeing less downforce in the cars and higher straightaway speeds but a lot more braking to get the cars slowed down. Also some of the things the teams are doing with the brakes to help the handling of the race cars. They’re popping up, becoming some issues and failures, causing some big wrecks like we saw at Kansas with Joey Logano and now with Jimmie Johnson in Pocono.”

--Jeff Gordon

On Kyle Larson:

“We talk about the greatness of Jimmie Johnson. Kyle Larson is the next Jimmie Johnson of NASCAR. Absolutely.”

--Jeff Gordon

On the few numbers of drivers who led the most laps in 2017 and went on to win the race:

“It’s been interesting to watch the trend this year of how many winners – only three so far this year – have led the most laps and gone on to win the race. It’s because of stages and the strategy that has played out late in these races. When you’re the late leader like Kyle Busch was (at Pocono), you’re just a sitting duck when the caution comes out late.”

--Jeff Gordon

On the impact of encumbered finishes on the playoff picture and Joey Logano’s three-point cushion over the cut-off to make the 16-driver playoffs (with an encumbered win):

“A lot of people had been wondering what an encumbered finish really means, and we’re seeing the effects of it now. For some drivers, although they have a win, they really need to get into the top 16 in points due to the sheer number of different winners this season and the fact we likely will have a couple more. The other thing that catches my eye is the points gap. Clint Bowyer is in 10th but is 215 points behind the leader. That’s huge. With stage points, you can lose a lot in one race but also make up a lot of points.”

--Larry McReynolds

On this weekend’s race at Michigan International Speedway:

“There is no telling what we’ll see this week at Michigan. We saw speeds through turn 1 of over 200 mph at Pocono, but they will be more than 210 mph at Michigan. The cars will be flying there. Plus the track is wide, so we’ll see two- and three-wide racing all day long.”

--Michael Waltrip

On Darrell Wallace Jr.’s Cup Series debut at Pocono:

“I was very impressed by Bubba Wallace the entire weekend. To go out there and qualify 16th, and he stayed positive and upbeat all weekend long. Just think about all the things he had to deal with that he’s never been faced with before. The race was 400 miles long – the longest race he has ever run – in very hot, humid conditions. He has never had a driver-adjustable track bar to contend with before, but the biggest thing probably was the digital dash, also his first time with that.”

--Larry McReynolds
