The two-lane road off of Highway 701 in Loris probably hasn’t seen as much commotion as it did Monday in a long time. If ever.

Hundreds of people filled Gerald Road with bright blue shirts and hard hats, cheering and clapping, for one reason. They were all there to give a family in need the gift of a lifetime: an extreme home makeover.

Television crew members, home builders, designers, friends, and strangers were there in the cold temperatures to surprise the Suggs family with the news that they are the newest family to get a brand new home from the TV show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”

Horry County police officers nominated fellow officer Derrick Suggs and his wife, Amanda, for the show. They thought the family could use a bigger house, and one that isn’t falling apart.

The house they live in now is a special one to them. Derrick inherited it from his grandfather , who built it himself in 1953.

But it’s just not sufficient for the family, with kids at home ranging in age from nine months to 19 years old.

NASCAR superstar Jeff Gordon is trading in driving a car this week…to drive in some nails.

Show organizers asked Gordon to help with this build, since the Suggs are big into NASCAR. Living a few hours away in Charlotte, Gordon jumped at the idea to help a family as deserving as this one.
