Timmy 'Mini' Tyrrell, 8, Races to Help Other Kids' Cancer Battles

Under a blazing late-May sun, surrounded by people he had never met before at race track he had never seen before in the middle of a place known as Possum Kingdom, Timmy "Mini" Tyrrell still felt right at home.
This is Mini's domain, and he's at ease here.
The 8-year-old thrives in this environment whether he's at a track near his hometown of Manassas, Va., or at a big track in a little place some nine hours from his father's auto repair shop.
Just minutes away from his first qualifying run of what promises to be a long day, Mini spins the back left tire on his go-kart, listening with a critical ear and looking with an intense gaze as drivers begin lining up at the Possum Kingdom Super Speedway in southernmost Greenville County.
"Do you see something on there you don't like?" asks his father, Timmy.
For the elder Tyrrell, that's a question not unlike a double-edged sword.
If Mini sees or hears something that he doesn't like, you can bet your torque wrench that he's going to do something about it.
Mom and dad found that out a few years ago.
"We had some friends over and their young daughter (Ella Gay) was battling cancer," said Mini's mother, Tina. "Mini was playing with her in another room, but he overheard us talking to her parents."
Among the topics were the many struggles that accompany a cancer diagnosis for the vast majority of families, including the financial burden of traveling to and from various hospitals and clinics, the cost of lodging and meals and even the challenge of keeping the gas tank filled in the family van.
The girl's father recounted a recent experience that ended with him walking home after all of his maxed-out credit cards were rejected at a local gas station.
When the family left, Mini immediately approached his parents.
"That's not right," Mini said, with no small air of indignation. "Something has to be done, and you have to help me. I'll race my go-kart and raise money."
