NASCAR's Jeff Gordon Helps Out at Gleaners in Detroit
It seems Jeff Gordon appeared on the NASCAR scene just yesterday -- the skinny kid with the mullet from Vallejo, Calif.
But last week at Darlington, Gordon started his 700th consecutive Sprint Cup race. He started driving for Hendrick Motorsports full-time in 1993, when Travis Fryman, Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker and Kirk Gibson were all still with the Tigers.
The seasons have gone fast and furious for Gordon, who is 41, a four-time Cup champion, father of two and one of stock car racing's elder statesmen.
Though he wants to win a fifth title, he last captured a Cup championship in 2001, Gordon says he is at ease with where his career has taken him.
On Thursday, Gordon was in downtown Detroit donating his time to one of the many charitable causes he has gotten behind over the past 10 years.
His appearance Thursday morning at the Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan on Beaufait Street was further proof that there is life outside the race car for the NASCAR veteran, who also has his own Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation and supports the Make-a-Wish Foundation, the Hendrick Marrow Program and Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.
