A Special Visit to the Jeff Gordon Children's Hospital
Each year I look forward to having the opportunity to visit the Jeff Gordon Children's Hospital and see all of the incredible work that they're doing for children facing illness. My last visit was the first time that Ella was able to come with me to see some of the children and hand out gifts. It was a great experience being able to see her interact with the kids and tell them, "Hope you get better soon."
Friday's visit was definitely a special one for me as it was the first time we were able to go together as a family and have both Leo and Ella spend time with the kids, as well as pass out presents. They both made Ingrid and me very proud.
A lot has been accomplished the last few years through your help and generous support of the Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation. The Children's Hospital has recently added an interactive information center where children can play games on digital touch screen monitors and the Children's Advocacy Center to help support children who have suffered mental and sexual abuse. They'll soon be starting a new project to build a playground on the children's floor.
It truly breaks your heart to see these children faced with illness and disease. You can feel the pain that the families experience. You know that it isn't just the child's battle, but it's also the parents who have to see their children suffer.
Being able to talk briefly with these kids and their families is something that really means a lot to me. As a parent, you never want your children to suffer, yet you're reminded that anyone's children can be affected and none of them deserve it. It inspires me to do more. It pushes me to be the best father that I can be. It causes me to cherish each moment spent with my children and family.
I hope that during this holiday season we'll all not take anything for granted, that we'll be the best people that we can be and make the commitment to help others as we're able.
I'm looking forward to a little time off before we start getting ready for the 2013 season and this new race car, which I'm really excited about. It will be here before we know it.
