During the week of June 21st through the 25th the Jeff Gordon Children's Hospital hosted its second annual Camp Open Airways program. Camp Open Airways was created for children suffering with asthma. The purpose of the camp is to provide educational training on living with asthma and of course to have a little fun.

Each day consists of an informational session with Dr. Alan Harsh, Pediatric Pulmonologist for the Jeff Gordon Children's Hospital. Dr. Harsch speaks freely with the children about a management plan focused on controlling their asthma and answers any questions they may have.

Camp Open Airways creates a different theme every day, from the Wild West to Safari. Wednesday was themed around NASCAR racing and the road crew from the #24 team came out to spend a day with the campers. The West Cabarrus Branch YMCA was taken over by NASCAR themed posters, checkered flags, and Austin Langenstein's Bandolero car. The #24 show car was on display and fired up for the excitement of all.

Throughout the morning each of the guys worked closely with the campers decorating painted wooden race cars with racing stickers and glitter. The campers enjoyed designing their own race cars with helpful tips from the crew on how many flame stickers were necessary to make the car fast. The crew then received a few pointers of their own, when the campers introduced them to frisbee baseball in the gymnasium.

Success of the #24 team is measured not only on the track but away from it as well; Jeff and his teammates share a passion for children. The #24 road crew that attended consisted of Justin Alexander, Bart Apple, Jason Burdett, Andy Kruep, Travis Mack, Shannon McGlammery, Kevin Meandering, John Smetzer, and Matt Todd.

After a day of hanging with the #24 road crew, and filming a spot for the speed channels pre-race show the campers enjoyed a lunch of Paventi's pizza. From there it was off to the swimming pool for an afternoon cool down.
